| How do I use my StudSensor™ stud finder with different materials?
A StudSensor™ stud finder will accurately scan through up to 3/4 inches (19 mm) of common construction materials in normal mode and up to 1 1/2 inches (38 mm) in DeepScan® mode. Three factors can adversely impact sensing depth: thickness, density, and moisture content.
Zircon® products effectively scan through most sheet materials. Examples include:
- Gypsum drywall
- Dry wallpaper (with no metallic fibers)
- Textured walls or ceilings of uniform thickness (scan through a thin piece of cardboard to avoid texture damage.)
StudSensor™ and MultiScanner® products are not designed to scan materials with inconsistent density such as:
- Ceramic floor tile
- Carpeting and padding
- Wallpaper with metallic fibers
- Damp freshly painted walls (allow painted walls st least a week to dry)
- Lath and plaster walls
- Foil covered insulation board
- Wall paneling
