How do I use my StudSensor stud finder with different materials?

A StudSensor stud finder will accurately scan through up to 3/4 inches (19 mm) of common construction materials in normal mode and up to 1 1/2 inches (38 mm) in DeepScan® mode. Three factors can adversely impact sensing depth: thickness, density, and moisture content.

Zircon® products effectively scan through most sheet materials. Examples include:

  • Gypsum drywall
  • Dry wallpaper (with no metallic fibers)
  • Textured walls or ceilings of uniform thickness (scan through a thin piece of cardboard to avoid texture damage.)

StudSensor and MultiScanner® products are not designed to scan materials with inconsistent density such as:

  • Ceramic floor tile
  • Carpeting and padding
  • Wallpaper with metallic fibers
  • Damp freshly painted walls (allow painted walls at least a week to dry)
  • Lath and plaster walls
  • Foil covered insulation board
  • Wall paneling
