I know there's a wire behind my wall. Why can't I find it?
We designed our patented WireWarning® detection to detect one thing--hot unshielded AC wiring. This essential feature helps you avoid accidental electrocution. The WireWarning® detection will only work properly in specific situations. Some things to be aware of:
- The circuit must be turned on. If you must identify wiring behind the surface, turn on the power first. Be sure to always turn off power before nailing or drilling into the wall.
- If the wiring is shielded by metal conduit, WireWarning® technology won't find it. Consider using one of our metal scanners to locate the conduit.
- The WireWarning® detection has a range of about 2 inches. Anything deeper than that will not be detected.
- Paints with metallic ingredients will hide the electrical signal. This is most often a concern in older structures with lead-based paint.
Go with your instincts. If you suspect wires and your scan fails to identify them, it's always a good bet to TURN OFF the power to all circuits that could be running through the wall. A little extra precaution could be all it takes to avoid a dangerous accident.
