Why You Need to Calibrate your Zircon Stud Finder

“Hi this is Eric with another Zircon Tip Minute.

Today we’re going to talk about how to calibrate your stud finder and why it is so important.

Whether you’re scanning for studs, metal or live wires the first step is always letting the tool calibrate properly before you move it.

Why? Well, every wall is a unique combination of different woods, drywall materials, layers of paint or wallpaper.  The tool can’t scan for objects behind the wall until it knows what the wall looks like to its sensors.

For instance, if you’re scanning for studs the tool uses a weak electrical field to measure the wall density. Then if it scans over something denser like a stud it indicates that it found something.

So, what happens if you calibrate over the object that you’re trying to find? Well, it depends on the tool you’re using. If you calibrate over a stud in stud scan mode and move away, basic Zircon Stud Finders will flash and beep to indicate there has been a calibration problem. This is our patented over the stud indication. More advanced Zircon Stud Finders will automatically recalibrate and even display an arrow telling you to scan back in the direction of the stud you started over.

Make sure to see our other Tip Minutes for more information on Scanning for Metal and Live Wires.”
