Zircon Corporation Announces Its Green Industry Initiative

CAMPBELL, Calif., March 25, 2022 – Zircon Corporation, manufacturer of the original electronic stud finder, today announced an update to its Company-wide Green Industry initiatives. The announcement highlights Zircon’s advancements in key areas, reinforcing a multi-pronged strategy to contribute to sustainable product development and minimize impact on the environment globally. These Green Industry initiatives include its Trapped Blister Project to reduce plastic packaging usage, a QR Code Implementation Project to digitize documents and minimize paper waste, and implementing government material-related policy regulations both domestically and in the EU.

Zircon’s Trapped Blister Project, one of the most substantive Green Industry projects completed to date, reduces the Company’s plastic packaging usage with the goal of finding alternative solutions. This includes moving away from the more plastic-heavy, chemical-filled, clamshell packaging to the more environmentally friendly trapped blister. The project represents more than a 71% reduction of clamshell plastic, from an average of 29.4 grams of plastic per unit to only 8.43 grams average of plastic per unit.  The project took more than a year to complete.

An additional waste reduction initiative in the works since 2018, the QR Code Implementation Project, eliminates the use of DVDs and paper z-cards contained within the product packaging cavity. Now, users can scan a QR code to view how-to videos, additional product information, and read updated product instructions with the use of their smartphones.

“Environmental and social impact awareness is at the core of how we operate, and we are committed to being a force for change in the electronic hand tool industry,” said Sharon Gee, VP of Marketing at Zircon. “From large-scale projects to small changes, we are dedicated to working towards minimizing waste generation. Zircon also maintains an acute awareness of and responsibility for the potential health and safety impacts on our customers and the environment. As such, Zircon continues to comply with governmental material restriction policies.”

Three other major Green Industry steps Zircon has taken include compliance with legislation on global material restrictions such as RoHS (Restriction on Hazardous Substances), REACH (registration, evaluation authorization, and restriction of chemicals), both on a European Union directive, and California Proposition 65 legislation. Zircon’s product development processes incorporate checkpoints to further ensure supply chain compliance, requiring suppliers to show documentation of their product safety reviews and testing certificates to ensure materials purchased by Zircon meet these policy directives.

Zircon will continue to drive business growth and better serve customers and the environment through its Green Industry Initiatives well into the future.
