Finding Wall Studs through Thick Walls

“Hi this is Eric with the Zircon Tip Minute.

Today we’re going to discuss the deep scan feature on this MultiScanner i520.

Standard household walls have a single layer of drywall 1/2 of an inch to 3/4 of an inch thick. But some walls have two layers instead of one. These are often called firewalls and you find them between apartments, between garages and living quarters, or any other place that you may need extra fire protection.

So how do you know if you’re scanning over an extra thick wall?

Well, if you scan the wall in the regular stud scan mode and either don’t get any readings or get erratic readings with only a few bars on the signal strength indicator, you’re probably over a thick wall.

Turn the tool to deep scan mode. Now place the tool on the wall. Then press and hold the power button, a beep and the word ‘stud’ flashes to confirm the tool is calibrated and ready to scan. The middle of the stud is indicated by the four middle bars.

Make sure to see our next video ‘Scanning Textured Wall’ for more information on how to use deep scan.
