How to Use a Stud Finder

“Hi this is Eric with the Zircon Tip minute.

Today I’d like to talk to you about how to locate a stud using a Zircon MultiScanner i520 OneStep.

Standard household walls are 5/8 to 3/4 of an inch drywall with studs spaced every 12,16, or 24 inches. When finding studs you need to find both edges and center of the stud. Always anchor nails and screws into the center of the stud.

Place a strip of masking or painters tape on the wall for you to mark.

Switch this tool to the Stud Scan Mode. Place the tool on the wall, then press and hold the power button. The tool will calibrate to the wall, a beep and the word ‘stud’ confirm that the tool is calibrated. Scan the wall until you find a stud.

The tool will indicate both edges with the LCD screen and the center, with the spotlight pointing system and audio tone. Mark all three locations.

If you happen to start over a stud and move away, you’ll see an arrow on the LCD Screen. This is the tools way of telling you that you need to go back to find the stud.
